Health – What do we do

Why Did We Commit Ourselves to Cancer Care

The incidence of Cancer is rising across India and the globe. Hence our Cancer Care is a global initiative.

The social and economic impact of cancer is staggering. According to GLOBECON2012, the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) suffered $46.3 billion in productivity loss due to cancer. It makes for 0.33% of their combined GDP.

Cancer in India

  • Estimated number of people living with the disease: around 2.5 million
  • Every year, new cancer patients registered: Over 7 lakhs
  • Cancer-related deaths: 5,56,400

Deaths in the age group between 30-69 years

  • Total: 3,95,400 (71% of all cancer related deaths)
  • Men: 2,00,100
  • Women: 1,95,300

Cancers of oral cavity and lungs in males and cervix and breast in females account for over 50% of all cancer deaths in India.

The top five cancers in men and women account for 47.2% of all cancers. They are listed below:

The Possibilities

Many cancers can be prevented through lifestyle changes.

When they do occur, early detection and treatment can completely cure many cancers.

The prevention and early treatment can significantly reduce the death rate from cancers.

Preventive Care

Preventive Care campaigns are designed to educate the participants about the effects of:

  1. Lifestyle
  2. Product usage (cosmetics, wellness products, and so on.)
  3. Eating habits
  4. Obesity
  5. Smoking
  6. Use of tobacco products

Also, the campaigns help participants understand what preventive measures they can take to avoid cancer.

Primary Care

Primary Care includes early diagnosis facilities and pre- and post-treatment care for the patient. Though the role of primary care was marginal, today the need to stabilise healthcare costs, patient preference for receiving care closer to home, the economic burden on insurers are driving primary care to ever higher scope.

Along with the local medical fraternity, Life Again Foundation’s warriors play a central role in primary care. While the medical fraternity provides the healthcare advice and preliminary diagnostic tests, the warriors provide the ecosystem that supports provisioning the care and help cancer patients fight the war against cancer.
